April Is National Heartworm Awareness Month

Oct 25, 2020

April is National Heartworm Awareness Month, providing the perfect opportunity to emphasize the value of heartworm disease detection and prevention with your clients. Heartworm infection has been diagnosed in all 50 states, so this needs to be taken seriously.

Conscientious pet owners understand they need to be on the lookout for a host of issues that can affect the health and well-being of their pets. One such issue is heartworm disease.

The American Heartworm Society notes that heartworm disease is caused by foot-long worms that live in the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels of affected pets. Known as heartworms, these worms can cause severe lung disease, heart failure and organ damage. Some instances of heartworm infection may be proven fatal.

What are the signs of heartworm disease?

  • Lethargy
  • Changes in appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Asthmatic symptoms
  • Fainting or collapsing
  • Lower energy levels
  • Difficulty breathing

Many pet owners want to know- how can I prevent this?

Such prevention is simple and inexpensive. Monthly or semi-annual treatments of prescription oral pills aimed at killing heartworms at the different stages help prevent heartworms from infecting dogs.

We are offering 20% off our in-clinic preventatives through the end of the month. Give us a call if you have questions!
